Yazoo’s “Nobody’s Diary” was released in May 1983 and became the only single from their second — and ultimately final — album, You and Me Both. Written by fellow Basildonian Alison Moyet, a former pupil of my old school, Nicholas Comprehensive School, and paired with the trademark synth-pop brilliance of future Erasure member Vince Clarke, the song entered the UK charts at number 20 before climbing to an impressive number 3 a few weeks later.
It’s a beautiful slice of early-1980s synth-pop, filled with that unmistakable Vince Clarke sound: bright analogue synths, electronic rhythms, and a melody that feels uplifting despite the heartbreak at its core. Moyet’s wonderfully distinctive voice tells the story of someone desperately trying not to become “just another page” in another person’s life — watching a relationship slowly slip away while still clinging to the hope that it can somehow be saved.
It’s also a song I remember hearing constantly on the TV and radio when I was little.
Without a doubt, it remains one of my favourite songs of the 1980s.
