I honestly can’t describe just how immersive Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is on PSVR2. It really is one of the most incredible virtual reality experiences I’ve ever had.
Here’s a little video I put together of a flight from Southend Airport to London City Airport in a Cessna. Admittedly, you probably don’t see many Cessnas landing at a major airport like London City, but that’s the beauty of virtual aviation — you can do things that might raise a few eyebrows in the real world!
The video doesn’t really do justice to the experience. No matter how good a recording looks, it simply can’t capture the sensation of sitting in the cockpit with a VR headset on, surrounded by the world around you. The feeling of actually flying is astonishing and not something that can translate to a flat 2D display.
Now, I’m no pilot, so please don’t be too critical of my flying! Yes, I was probably a little too low at times, yes, I was definitely taxiing too fast, and yes, I almost certainly broke a few aviation rules along the way. But all things considered, I was quite pleased with the landing.
Flight simulators have come a very long way since the days of ACE on the Commodore 64 and classics such as F/A-18 Interceptor, Falcon, and Fighter Bomber on the Amiga. As much as I loved those games, this is without question the most impressive flight simulator I’ve ever played.
