3D Game Boxes – Total Eclipse & Total Eclipse II : Sphinx Jinx

Following Driller and Dark Side, Total Eclipse brings the Freescape 3D engine back down to Earth, giving you an exciting Indiana Jones-esque inspired adventure set in 1930s Egypt. An early first-person adventure from 38 years ago that admittingly doesn’t move the fastest due to the Commodore 64 lacking the power to calculate and redraw complex solid 3D polygons, but that never bothered me. The puzzles are challenging, the rooms are varied and feature more detail than previous Freescape games, and the music is appropriate for the setting. This pack even came with the sequel which was only available to members of the Home Computer Club (and later featured on a Commodore Format covertape).

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Freescape games, so it comes as no surprise that I highly recommend Total Eclipse to anyone looking for a solid adventure game, even if it is looking its age. It’s another stonker from Incentive Software, but the best was yet to come with their next Freescape game, Castle Master.
